BLACK WITCH MOTH //
✋foamy icee
👃overripe fruits (coconut, taro, ube, guava, banana, pineapple, lime), lush jungle leaves, coconut milk, ginger, pandan, and coriander
this magnificent creature spans far across the southern U.S. to Central America. Though they generally fly at night, you may see one during the day under an awning. Adult moths love to feed on soft, overripe fruit, especially bananas, while larvae enjoy leaves.
These large, airborne creatures are frequently mistaken for bats, and there are many superstitions that have evolved around them as a result. In reality, their ears can actually detect the echolocation signals generated by bats, which helps them *avoid* this potential predator.
But let's get into the lore. The black witch is considered a harbinger of death in many cultures. In Mexico, an ill person will perish if the moth enters their home, and people sometimes joke that if it flies over someone's head, they will lose their hair. In the lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas, it's believed that death only occurs if the moth visits all four corners of the house.
In Jamaica, this "duppy bat" is seen as the embodiment of a lost soul that cannot rest and remains to inflict harm on the living. In Paraguay, people fear the moth will release its eggs onto human victims, developing into maggots. Some also believe the moth can cause you to go blind if it touches your eyes. Yet, in Hawaii, the stories take a happier turn - the moth is an embodiment of a dead person's soul returning to say goodbye.
Black Witch Moth is my coated foamy icee texture in a deep royal blue hue splashed in shimmering copper, lavender, pink, and tarnished gold pigments (like the moth's powdery scaled wings) and scented like overripe fruits (coconut, taro, ube, guava, banana, pineapple, lime) growing in a lush jungle. A splash of coconut milk and a bite of ginger, pandan, and coriander add a bit of creaminess and kick to the mellow green, leafy, and fruity notes. It comes with iridescent glitters reflecting the visual nature of the moth, and a delicate, realistic, paper black witch moth made which will dissolve when mixed into the slime.
