Many familiar with the film Spirited Away will recognize Oshira-sama, the oversized, anthropomorphic radish spirit with a sake bowl overturned on his head. Contrary to Miyazaki’s whimsical presentation, Oshira-sama is in fact a real deity from Japanese folklore, particularly revered in the Tōhoku region of Japan. Oshira-sama is often represented by two simple dolls made from mulberry wood or cloth – one a woman and the other a horse. (ghibli.store)

One variation of the legend of Oshira-sama tells of a woman who fell in love with and married a horse. Enraged, her father killed the horse. The woman, devastated, prayed at the horse's skin, which then wrapped around her like a cocoon as they ascended to the heavens. In that moment, a shower of black and white insects fell from the sky onto a mulberry tree and began eating their leaves: these were the first silkworms, and the woman’s family became the first silk merchants in the land. Oshira-sama is primarily worshipped as a deity associated with agriculture, fertility, and protection of the home. During ritual, the dolls are dressed in new clothes and offered rice, sake, and other foods for a bountiful harvest.

This slime honors the film’s…unique…interpretation with a portrayal of rich vegetable-filled dumplings the Radish Spirit might eat during his stay at the Bathhouse.
