The practice of leaving offerings for those who have passed away reflects a desire, spanning cultures & time, to connect with our ancestors & offer them comfort. These rituals create sacred space where the worlds of the living & dead are bridged.

This set of 3 minis resurrects 3 slimes I made in years past.

FADING EMBERS // Samhain marks the division between light (summer) & dark (winter), when the veil between worlds is thin, allowing spirits to pass through. In ancient Celtic Ireland, people played games, scattered ashes, & walked amongst the communal bonfire to cleanse. Bones of slaughtered livestock were cast in, from which household fires were restarted, symbolizing community unity. Ancestors’ spirits were welcomed with food offerings. These fires, imitative of the sun, protected & cleansed, reminding all of the sun’s enduring power through winter.

CORAZÓN DE LA MISIÓN // Alejandro Murguía, “the voice of La Misión" & San Francisco's first Latino poet laureate, says “Telling stories about the everyday people of California [is] what I’m trying to do. I’m not ‘documenting’ the Mission. I write about it because it’s home.” The Mission is known for its working-class immigrant residents, political history & rapid gentrification. Jeannie Whitlock writes, "30-somethings clack away on rows of laptops on a cafe’s refurbished wooden tables, right next to abuelitas perusing the rows of a mercado’s oranges, plantains, peppers, & limes [...] Inequity grew. Housing prices soared, forcing many renters out. The Mission’s history is inextricably linked to displacement. [...] struggle is at the heart of Murguía’s Mission."

SOUL CAKE // is a small shortbread-type cake traditionally made for Samhain, a Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest. Some say soul cakes were used in a lottery; the person who drew the burnt cake became the human sacrifice for the year. Others say they were offerings to placate wandering ghosts as the veil between worlds thinned. By the 8th century, England's Christian church adopted soul cakes for Halloween & All Souls' Day. Filled with sweet spices & currants, they were given to poor travelers or as offerings to the dead.
