JUST BEYOND OUR GRASP // You come across a girl picking wild blueberries. She smiles and greets you, "Aaniin," offering you some from her birch bark basket...but upon reaching in, you pull out a handful of small stones, all the colors of the rainbow. The snickering girl runs into the trees as fast and light as a rabbit. You throw some of the stones. When the stones reach the top of their arc above your head, they turn into butterflies all the colors of the rainbow. Incredible! The rest of the stones tumble from your hand and hit the ground—instantly turning black as the night. Your heart leaps in surprise. How strange!

In ancient times, Spirit Woman had twin babies, and the animals cared for them devotedly. The bear shared his fur, the wolf hunted, the doe provided milk, and the dog was an excellent guardian. After a while, the animals noticed the twins couldn't walk. Concerned, they gathered and shared observations. The children ate well and splashed during baths -- what could be wrong? The spirit Nanabush reflected, “You have cared for the children very well. In fact, so well that they never need to do anything for themselves. All little ones need to learn to reach out for what they want instead of always having everything handed to them. I shall find out what we can do."

Nanabush searched among the mountains, where they found thousands of tiny sparkling rainbow-colored stones. They watched them for a long while but got bored and began to toss them, one after another, into the air. Astonished, they saw the pebbles changing into memengwaag -- the first butterflies. The beautiful creatures fluttered here & there before they came to nestle on Nanabush’s shoulders, following them back to the twins, who crowed with pleasure and stretched out their arms to the beautiful creatures. But the butterflies always fluttered just beyond the grasp of the small, outstretched hands. Soon the twins began to crawl, walk, and even run to try to catch the butterflies. (Ojibwe tale)
