SASQUATCH // Fog fills the margins of redwoods, vanishing their high crowns. A strong musk reminiscent of gasoline makes your eyes water. Behind distant sets of trees, a titanic silhouette lurches past. Broken lines of blood splotch the stranger's footprints. You come upon a maimed elk, whose sundered antlers have left behind patches of exposed tissue. The sediment-covered corpse seems to have been dragged some considerable distance. The stranger watches, silent and unmoving, while you step backward the way you came. Even after you've lost sight of their form, their glowing eyes hang in the fog.

The legend of Sasquatch has captivated the public's imagination for years with stories of elusive, massive, ape-like beings who roam the wilderness. They are described as both formidable predators and benevolent spirits, though media sensationalism has contributed to a view of Sasquatch as a monstrous threat. Many Indigenous tribes across the United States & Canada have their own iterations of these enigmatic creatures. in fact, the term "Sasquatch" is believed to have originated from the Halkomelem word "sásq'ets," referring to a hairy, wild man. Early accounts by journalist J.W. Burns in the 1920s introduced these legends to a broader audience, solidifying the name.

Parallels between ancient accounts and modern-day Bigfoot sightings underscore the enduring allure of these legends. Adding to the intrigue are petroglyphs (e.g. at Painted Rock) that depict these creatures and further fuel speculation. These tales long predate the surge in Bigfoot stories during the late 1950s when tracks were discovered.

Some Indigenous folks continue to pass down these tales to new generations. Within Ojibwa teachings, the Sasquatch, or Sabe, holds a central role. The Ojibwa expression "Kichi-Sabe" encapsulates the concept of "walking tall" with honesty and integrity. It's believed that this guardian of the wilderness once walked among humans, serving as a reminder to remain true to our spirits.
